“Life is full of hard stuff. So, if we’re not going to have some pleasure along the way, then we’re missing the point.”

- Sarah Nannen

Sarah Nannen is a keynote speaker, empowerment coach, and authored the best-selling book Grief Unveiled: A Widow’s Guide to Navigating Your Journey in Life After Loss. Sarah became a military widow and solo mom of four young children in 2014 when her husband died in an aviation accident. Her journey through grief opened her eyes to a renegade way of living life that goes beyond just surviving the ride. This idea now informs her work with people breaking through their limitations to live extraordinary lives. Sarah guides those in painful life transitions to identify and sustainably integrate the life of their new dreams into reality. Her podcast, Grief Unveiled, offers up weekly conversations dedicated to real talk and real truth about grief and living, breaking free from limitations and into extraordinary possibility.

“Why are we celebrating people’s commitment to overriding their systemic alarm system to accomplish something that maybe could have waited until you were healthy?”

- Sarah Nannen

We jump right into this episode, talking about radical ownership of our lives. We dig into the challenges inherent in our culture’s focus on celebrating self-sacrifice, whether that’s playing through pain or showing up at work after little to no sleep. There is a lot to unpack in this episode if you’ve experienced grief, but there are loads of valuable insights for anyone simply looking to establish their own boundaries and to be more truthful about their pursuit of enjoyment and pleasure in life.

“Constant frustration, chronic resentment and anger. All three of those things are screaming at us to let us know that we need to reevaluate what is really just boundaries—with ourselves more than other people, a lot of the time.”

- Sarah Nannen

“[Pleasure] doesn’t negate the pain, but also pain doesn’t negate the possibility of experiencing even small moments of pleasure.”
